Gain control in tough times with a coping toolbox

Stress is part of a meaningful life. It helps us identify what is important.

However, thinking clearly and making good decisions during stress are almost impossible. That’s why it’s helpful to devise a plan when you are thinking clearly when you need it. Before building your toolkit, the first and most important thing is to learn to check in with yourself. Knowing your emotions and needs enables you to pick the right coping mechanism for the moment.

Ask yourself:

  • Are my physical needs met? Am I hungry, thirsty, tired?
  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What do I need? Are my physical needs met?
  • Am I hungry, thirsty, tired?
  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What do I need?

Here are some ideas for what to include in your toolkit:

  • Physical self-care. Taking care of your body with things like exercise and eating right can help you feel your best and face whatever life throws your way.
  • In-the-moment coping. Taking a break is great but not always doable. Therefore, it's helpful to have some quick coping skills, like taking a few deep breaths or listening to a favorite song.
  • Mindfulness. Focusing on the present moment and grounding yourself in your senses can help you get out of your head and take one step at a time.
  • Creative expression. Activities like making music, art, or writing can help you work through emotions.
  • Sensory coping. Do something that delights the senses. Look at some art, listen to music, use a comfy blanket, light a candle that smells great, have a warm cup of tea, or do something else involving your senses.
  • Social connection. In tough times, lean on a close friend or family member to feel better.

It’s best to do this as a written list so you don’t have to rely on memory. Think of it as a self-care menu. It may feel a bit off at first, but keep trying new things and keep practicing.Over time it will become more automatic.
