Walking is an easy way to get active and improve your heart health.
It gets your heart pumping, boosts circulation, and helps your lungs work better. Over time, a regular walking routine can lower blood pressure, reduce body fat, and improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Steps to help you start a heart-healthy walking routine
- Talk to your doctor before beginning a walking routine. Your doctor can help you understand what is safe for you.
- Begin gradually, even 5-10 minutes to start if you haven’t been active for some time and work up to 30 minutes daily.
- Set a walking goal: 10 minutes in the morning and evening, five days a week.
- A phone app or wearable device can help you monitor your progress.
- Wear comfortable shoes and socks that cushion your feet.
- Make sure to drink plenty of water, especially in hot and humid weather.
- Walk in your neighborhood, visit the park, or run errands.
- Walk with friends or co-workers. Invite them to join you or participate in a walking group.
- Plan family walks together.
- Take your pet for a walk.
- Have a backup plan if the weather is bad. Find an indoor place to walk, such as the mall or an indoor track, or use a treadmill.
