Connect your way to better health

Did you know that humans are wired to be social? As a result, feeling lonely can impact your physical and mental health.

Feeling connected with others can improve your health just as much as losing weight, quitting smoking, or exercising. We need social relationships to survive and thrive as much as we need healthy food, water, and sleep.

Just because we are around people does not mean we don’t feel lonely. Feeling lonely can come from needing more regular social contact or from a gap between the relationships you have and the ones you need or want.

Here are some tips to help you if you are feeling lonely:

  • Spend some time with yourself. Alone time is critical for good relations. Why? Because to have our needs met by others, we need to first connect with ourselves to figure out what those are. Regular time with yourself can help clarify what you need and want from relationships.
  • Think about getting a pet. A pet can be an excellent companion if you can care for one. The type of pet you choose is up to you.
  • Take care of the relationships you already have. To connect more, you may reach out to people you already know. Try calling a caring friend or family member you haven’t talked to in a while. It doesn’t have to be a long call. Just reaching out can keep those connections strong. And you never know how reaching out to just one person may connect you to even more people in your network. • Find new connections. Think about your hobbies or interests. Are there groups that get together to do those things? Can you use those to volunteer or help others? Often you can f ind opportunities to connect with people with shared interests online or through social media.
  • Consider seeing a counselor or mental health professional. Talking to a professional can give you someone to bounce ideas off of. It can also give you space to work through feelings that come up as you make changes. If you feel like you need some support getting started, or if feeling lonely makes it hard for you to function, a counselor or other mental health professional can help.
