Reduce your risk of heart disease

Heart disease can take many forms, but the most common one is coronary artery disease.

It can occur when fatty deposits build up inside the coronary arteries. These blood vessels supply blood and oxygen to your heart. The deposits can lead to hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), which increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Other factors, including certain health conditions, lifestyle, age, and family history, can increase your risk of developing heart disease.

Health conditions that can increase your risk:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Having diabetes

Lifestyle factors that can increase your risk:

  • Having excess weight
  • Eating an unhealthy diet high in fat, salt, and added sugar
  • Not engaging in a regular exercise routine
  • Drinking alcohol in excess
  • Smoking or using other tobacco products

Lower your risk of heart disease by making lifestyle changes

Know your health risks and family history. Talk to your doctor about your risk for heart disease.

Maintain a healthy weight.

Follow a healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products. Reduce your intake of salt, fat, and added sugar.

Get yourself moving. Work toward 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise weekly and muscle strengthening activities two days a week.

Choose healthy drink options like water instead of high-sugar drinks or fruit juices. Experts suggest limiting alcohol intake to no more than one drink for women and two for men.

Stop smoking or using tobacco products. Talk to your doctor about the options available to help you to quit.

Keep track of your heart health numbers, like cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Talk to your doctor about the goal numbers that are right for you.
